About AFRICAN RIVERS NETWORK
Formed in 2003, the African Rivers Network (ARN) is a network that brings together African civil society organizations and dam-affected communities advocating for sustainable utilization of African water resources and engages on river- and dam- related issues.
ARN envisions a people-centered development in Africa where:
-
Decision making on water and energy development practices alternatives to large dams
-
Human rights, community acceptance of decisions, and reparations of outstanding social injustices are the cornerstone
-
Ecological sustainability is the legacy for the future generations.
Mission
ARN is working towards ecological sustainability and social justice in the arena of large dams and their alternatives through: influencing decision making, amplifying community voices and rights, and building capacity of civil society and community participants..
ARN fulfills its mission by:
Promoting the WCD: The World Commission on Dams (WCD) published its global independent review of large dams in 2000 which provides a better framework for decision-making on dams. ARN is committed to creating awareness about and disseminating the WCD report; empowering local communities to use the WCD core values and strategic priorities; engaging regional government and financial institutions in dialogue on the WCD; and promoting national multi stakeholder structures, dialogue and processes on the WCD.
Promoting the Rights of Dam-Affected Communities: ARN is committed to helping African dam-affected communities to understand their rights and engage in the decision making process of dam building. ARN helps to organize affected communities into coalitions that can support and enable them to advocate for better access to information, build their capacity, protect their rights and engage in decision making processes with regard to the construction and operation of dams in Africa.
Building Research: ARN is committed to building the research capacity of members, embarking on research projects, documenting and disseminating data on the impact of existing dams and success stories where alternatives to dams have been taken.
Promoting Alternative Energies and Options to Dams: ARN advocates for the consideration of renewable energy sources and water options on an equal playing field to dams and against equal criteria in addressing the needs for the people of Africa.
