NAPE was formed in 1997 and is a registered indigenous environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) that works on a number of environmental issues with specific focus on undertaking lobbying and advocacy for sustainable use of natural resources in the areas of water and energy.

This will be achieved through the following strategic objectives: 1. Promote gender parity in the management of natural resources 2. Enhance good governance in the management of natural resources 3. Increase public awareness on best practices in natural resources management 4. To mitigate effects of environmental / climate change through sound management of natural resources
5. Develop and enhance the capacity of NAPE to achieve its objectives

Organizational Structures and Governance
NAPE is a membership organization whose membership is drawn from individuals as well as institutions. The organisation operates under the over-all policy guidance and supervision by a nine-person Board of Directors. The Board of Directors approves programmes and budget and ratify internal policies, among other business.
The Board is serviced by a full time Secretariat headed by the Executive Director who is the Chief Executive and Accounting officer. The Secretariat runs the day to day affairs of the organisation headed by the Executive Director.
NAPE Policies are formulated by the General Assembly of Members. The General Assembly of members meets on annual basis to appoint senior staff and members. This forum provides opportunity for members to influence NAPE Programmes and exercise their mandate on governance issues of the organization.
